Lakeside has a unique history in San Diego County. Literally built next to the only natural lake in the county, Lakeside was constructed in 1886 as a resort town, complete with a four-story, 80-room Victorian hotel that was often compared to the Hotel del Coronado. The area boomed in 1889 with the arrival of the railroad. Ranching, farming, and dairy quickly established Lakeside's regional importance and cemented its place in local history. The town's newspapers were a necessary communications platform in those days, also serving to document the history and growth of the community. These periodicals now contain some of the only source material extant documenting the development of the town of Lakeside.
